Empower CHWs Project (2025–2027)
Digitally Transforming Community Health in Rwanda.
CIICHIN, in partnership with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) and with funding from L’Initiative (Expertise France), is implementing the Empower CHWs Project (2025–2027). This initiative aims to strengthen Rwanda’s Community Health Worker (CHW) program through an AI-powered, digital platform that enhances training, service delivery, and equity in healthcare.
The project introduces an innovative e-learning system tailored for CHWs and their supervisors, replacing traditional in-person training with a cost-effective, mobile-first model. It integrates AI tools into the national Community Health Information System (CHIS) to improve diagnosis, reporting, and outbreak prediction. Special emphasis is placed on gender equity, with tools designed to match CHWs and patients based on gender and ensure equity-sensitive service provision.
CIICHIN leads the development of digital training content, AI integration, and a rigorous evaluation of the platform’s effectiveness, cost-efficiency, and scalability. By transforming how CHWs are trained and supported, this project is setting a new standard for inclusive, technology-driven health systems in Rwanda and beyond.
