While there is an emerging cadre of women authors in SSA, they still lag far behind their male counterparts in having prestigious authorship positions in health research, with francophone researchers affected most.
Among the suggestions this paper published in the BMJ Global Health puts forward include: having more multi-language journals, providing specialized editorial services for authors, and requiring meaningful collaborations between high income and LMIC researchers as well as institutions having policies that address the unique barriers that face women researchers while encouraging them.
This research was published in July 2022 and authored by Anwaar Baobeid of the Centre for Global Health, University of Toronto, Canada, among others, including Prof. Jeanine Condo of CIIC-HIN.
